Before you worry
How a first lesson actually goes
Nervous is normal. Nearly everyone is, the first time. So here’s the whole thing, start to finish, with nothing to dread.
You say hello
We have a proper chat first — what got you into guitar, what you want to play, whether you’ve touched one before. No audition. No right answers.
You play me a thing
A riff, a chord, or nothing at all if you’re brand new. I’m not marking you — I’m working out where you are so I know where to start.
We make a plan
Built around your songs and your pace, not a syllabus. You’ll leave knowing exactly what we’re working towards and the very next thing to practise.
You decide
If we click, brilliant — you book your next one. If not, no harm done, no card taken. The first twenty minutes are on me either way.
First lesson’s a chat, not a sales pitch. Honestly — that’s it.
The plain bit

One honest hourly rate, three lengths. Pick whatever suits the day — a quick focused session or a proper deep-dive.
Half lesson

Perfect for quick check-ins, focused work on a specific piece, or younger learners.
Standard lesson
45 min

The sweet spot. Enough time to cover technique, theory, and play through what you're working on.
Full lesson

A proper deep-dive. For intermediate/advanced players or anyone wanting to make real progress fast.
One-to-one, in person from Raskelf, North Yorkshire (near Easingwold), or online over video, anywhere in the world. Block bookings and family arrangements — just ask.

Bringing a child along?
Plenty of my students are under 16. Here's how it works, and what you can expect from me.
How a child's lesson runs
Thirty minutes suits most younger learners — long enough to get somewhere, short enough to hold attention. We start with a song they already love, not a method book, and build technique around it. Reading music comes later, if they want it.
You're welcome to sit in
For the first few lessons, or every lesson — your call. Some children settle faster with a parent in the room, some play more freely without. There's a comfy chair either way.
Family arrangements
Siblings can book back-to-back so it's one trip. Parents get their own login to the site, where you can see lesson notes, what to practise this week, and invoices — without borrowing your child's account.
Safeguarding
I'm DBS checked. Happy to show you the certificate on your first visit, and to answer any safeguarding question before you book.

Not nearby? Online lessons run over video with the same notes, the same plan and the same amount of me. Students in the room and students on a screen get treated exactly alike.

The more you tell me, the better I can tailor that first lesson. No detail is too small — favourite bands, a song you’ve always wanted to play, whether the guitar in the loft still has strings.
